Before using any of the information obtained from the following sites, you should know more about the West York Swimming program, and our home facility. If you are considering swimming for West York, you might find it advantageous to read over the following information and start getting a feel for the water before team practice starts on Friday, November 19th. If you are a member of a local athletic facility (with a pool) or the YMCA or YWCA consider taking advantage or their open lap swimming hours between now and the 19th. Also, the YMCA is giving potential West York Swim Team members, regardless of whether they are a member of the YMCA, an opportunity to swim at the Graham Aquatic Center Monday, November 15th through Thursday, November 18th. West York practices and competes at the Graham Aquatic Center. For competition we swim in an 8 lane 25 yard format. Most of the time we practice in a 25 yard format as well. Occaisionally we will practice in a 25 meter format (slightly longer than 25 yards). You may hear the terms lap and length used interchangebly. However, they are actually very different. 1 length of the pool is typically 25 yards. 1 lap begins and ends at the same place or is from one end of the pool to the other and back and is typically 50 yards. The shortest race in our meets is 50 yards or 2 lengths of the pool. The longest race in our meets is 500 yards or 20 lengths of the pool. If you have never done any competitive swimming you should start by simply swimming front crawl (what we typically refer to as freestyle). Don't worry if you get tired quickly. Swimming can be very difficult at first, but gets much easier through regular practice. Believe it or not, many people who have never done any competitive swimming are able to swim the 500 Freestyle after just a week or two of regular practice. Just start slow at first. Don't try to swim as fast as you can. It's more important to swim well and for as long as you are comfortably able. And remember, never swim alone. There should always be a lifeguard on duty.
